What Are Prayer Wheels?
Prayer wheels come from the Buddhist regions of Tibet, Nepal and Northern India. They date back to the 4th century and trace their origin to the Indian Saint and Scholar Nagarjuna. Prayer wheels can be made from any container that is filled with mantras or prayers and rotates.
Prayer wheels can be designed to spin by the human hand, wind, heat from a candle, water, solar power or electricity. Usually prayer wheels are designed to rotate clockwise, the direction the sun moves across the sky and the direction that the mantras are read so that as the prayer wheel spins the mantras are going in the same direction they are written.
Prayer wheels generate positive vibes, luck and prosperity as they spin. They radiate the wishes inside them to dispel negative energy and promote a cheerful, peaceful state of mind. Some prayer wheels can be held in your hand and some are as big as a room or even a small building.
The most common prayer inside prayer wheels is the mantra “OM MANI PADME HUM’ repeated thousands of times. OM MANI PADME HUM is a sacred prayer in the sanskrit language with many layers of meaning. It is an all encompassing prayer good for any occasion. Translated literally, it means “praise to the jewel and the lotus”. Its deeper meaning is a praise of compassion and wisdom and a wish that all beings may be free of suffering. May no harm come to anyone and may everyone be happy.
